Course Description
This course provides a practical approach to the management of patients of advancing age in a health care system or ambulatory setting. Students apply knowledge of aging and geriatric pharmacotherapy to care for older patients and make professional recommendations regarding appropriate, effective, and safe medication therapy; provide on-going medication therapy monitoring, assessments and recommendations for individual patients; review signs and symptoms of dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiac disease, renal disease and endocrine disorders (diabetes, etc.); evaluate signs and symptoms of illness in the older patient; identify seniors who may be at high risk for medication-related problems and formulate potential solutions; and participate in and demonstrate skill in communicating with older patients.
